Face-name association 1 Running head: FACE-NAME ASSOCIATION Why are some people’s names easier to learn than others? The effects of face similarity on memory for face-name associations

چکیده
Using synthetic faces that varied along four perceptual dimensions (Wilson, Loffler, & Wilkinson, 2002), we examined the effects of face similarity on memory for face-name associations. The nature of these stimuli allowed us to go beyond the categorical similarity manipulations used in previous verbal associative memory studies to trace out the parametric relation between similarity and various performance measures. In Experiment 1, we found that recall performance diminished as a function of how many studied faces were in the vicinity of the cue face in similarity space. Also, incorrect recalls were more likely to come from nearby positions in face space. Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrated analogous effects with a set of more distinguishable, photorealistic faces, and in an associative recognition task, respectively. These results highlight the similarity between associative recall and associative recognition, and between face-name association and other domains of associative memory. Face-name association 1 Running head: FACE-NAME ASSOCIATION Why are some people’s names easier to learn than others? The effects of similarity on memory for face-name associations
Building on previous studies of the effects of similarity on recognition memory for faces (e.g., Busey & Tunnicliff, 1999; Yotsumoto, Kahana, Wilson, & Sekuler, in press), we examined similarity’s role in the learning of novel face-name associations. In Experiment 1, subjects learned the names of synthetic faces that varied along four perceptual dimensions (Wilson, Loffler, & Wilkinson, 2002). ...

متن کاملElectrophysiological correlates of forming memories for faces, names, and face-name associations.
The ability to put a name to a face is a vital aspect of human interaction, but many people find this extremely difficult, especially after being introduced to someone for the first time. Creating enduring associations between arbitrary stimuli in this manner is also a prime example of what patients with amnesia find most difficult. To help develop a better understanding of this type of memory,...
متن کاملInterfering effects of retrieval in learning new information.
In 7 experiments, we explored the role of retrieval in associative updating, that is, in incorporating new information into an associative memory. We tested the hypothesis that retrieval would facilitate incorporating a new contextual detail into a learned association. Participants learned 3 pieces of information-a person's face, name, and profession (in Experiments 1-5). In the 1st phase, part...
متن کاملOrbitofrontal and hippocampal contributions to memory for face-name associations: the rewarding power of a smile.
Memory processes can be enhanced by reward, and social signals such a smiling face can be rewarding to humans. Using event-related functional MRI (fMRI), we investigated the rewarding effect of a simple smile during the encoding and retrieval of face-name associations. During encoding, participants viewed smiling or neutral faces, each paired with a name, and during retrieval, only names were p...
